HD Ferries (HD) today announced that it is preparing to take legal action against Condor Ferries (Condor) concerning a statement published by Condor on 3rd August 2007 stating: "Professed `low-cost' operation (sic) cannot be allowed to deliver `low-safety' services". Commenting on this action, the CEO of HD Ferries Chris Howe-Davies says: "The suggestion by Condor that our desire to offer low fares affects our ability to operate safely is entirely baseless. Our ship, HD1, has been managed from the outset by Northern Marine, a respected ship management company and wholly-owned subsidiary of Stena AB, one of the world's largest ferry operators. Our decision to retain such an established and experienced organisation underlines our intention to ensure that HD1 is operated entirely in accordance with best industry practice at all times. Moreover, our €11M investment in HD1 demonstrates the scale of our commitment to the markets we serve. We cannot allow our reputation to be harmed by the false statement made by Condor and so we feel compelled to take action to set the record straight". This action signals HD's intention to vigorously defend the company's right to compete on a fair and equal basis in the markets the company serves. Concludes Howe-Davies: "We're simply looking for a level playing field on which to offer choice and low fares to the travelling public".
